Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The George Main Stakes is a Group 1 Australian Thoroughbred horse race run under Weight for Age conditions, over a distance of 1600 metres at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney in September.

The race is named after George Main, a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club.

Inaugurated in 1945, the George Main Stakes first winner was Modulation. There have been several horses which have managed to win the race more than once including Kingston Town in 1981-82, Regal Rhythm in 1967-68, Count Radiant in 1964-65 and Shannon in 1946-47. The race's fastest winning time was recorded by Racing to Win in 2006 with 1 minute 33.75 seconds. The slowest recorded winning time was 1 minute 48.75 seconds by Montana in 1952.

The winner of the George Main Stakes is exempt from a ballot on the Epsom Handicap.

Horses contesting this race may head on to the Group 1 Epsom Handicap the following week at the same track. Rock Kingdom (6th in 2009) went on to win the Epsom, while Road To Rock (2009) finished third in the Epsom one week later.
